Worst accident: In 2008 at the Samsung 500 at Texas Motor Speedway, in one of the worst accidents in NASCAR history, McDowell’s right front sway bar broke, causing the car to hit SAFER barrier near head on (165 mph to zero in one foot) before reaccelerating in the opposite direction. Car spun around once, tipping onto its roof, then barrel rolled eight times with fire coming out of the engine compartment, shedding debris in all directions, until coming to a stop onto its tires (according to SPEED channel’s Bob Dilner). Because of various NASCAR safety features, he walked away from the crash without injury, waving to a stunned crowd.

In October 2013 McDowell moved to Leavine Family Racing’s No. 95 Ford for the 2014 NASCAR Spring Cup Series season and returned in 2015 for a 20 race schedule.

McDowell is known for his faith-and-family-first approach, working with the I am Second campaign and aligning with Christian sponsors such as K-LOVE and Thrivent Financial, a financial services organization that helps Christians be wise with money and live generously.
